About

Mala Petaka is a retro 2D Arcade Shooter inspired Sci-fi FPS powered by GZDoom engine. The gameplay is as simple as kill enemies you encounter, pick items, find key items to unlock doors and find the exit door. It's just like retro FPS mostly, but with more advanced weapons, alien & drone enemies, chiptune BGM & cartoony NES-like colourful environment. In the full version, you'll start at the hub map that let you choose the level you want to beat first via warp portals.

You play as 'Petaka', a guy that feels so angry & all he thinks is just kill every ugly green alien & annoying drones he encounters and he doesn't know why since he lost his memories. In this game, your job is to control him to destroy every threat you encounters and explore the various universe through the warp portals to find Memory Orbs to restore his memories.

Cool game! Wait for complete version ;)

I really enjoyed this! Made me feel like I was playing Doom! Well kinda. It definitely has its own spin on the game with the enemy types but all in all I had a great time. I’m excited to see where this game goes and your future products!

Hii, I've made a video about the game and wanted to share some feedback about it, hopefully it is useful for the development ^^

-The game has a clear concept and it is pretty well executed overall.

-The gameplay mechanics are quite what I expected, they are fun and responsive. The enemies work great and the level design is pretty good and makes the player use all the gameplay mechanics availables.

-Visually the game feels kind of fresh thanks to the colours chosen ^^

In conclusion, the idea is great and I hope you keep working on it. Hopefully this is useful for the development :D, also if you could subscribe that would help me a lot :)

Regards

I gotta say I absolutely love this. I cannot wait for a full release TBH. I absolutely adore retro shooters, they're the bomb. It just FEELS good to play. Keep pushing the pace here and you got yourself a winner. Hands down this is a must purchase for me on release :)

i like this but the saves still does not work

Hi, sorry for the late response. Did you extract your game to a protected folder? Or probably you can fix it by deleting "save" folder in your game directory and try to play and save the game again. If it's still happen, can you send me the screenshot when this is happened?

(1 edit)

oh, i did not extracted it, normally it works in rar, sorry for wasting your time

this game looks amazing the gamplay is fast its like the old doom 2d in a 3d world its fantastic i cant wait until the full release

there are some things you have to change that is

a tutorial i didnt get it that the first door was a door

and the weapons are to easy to get and to fast you get the best weapon 1 minute in

lastly is that there is a boss fight needed on the end of the game

(1 edit) (+1)

Really looking forward on the full game! Reminds me of Chex Quest but its on a unique NES inspired artstyle. I also Appreciate the sprite work.

a lil bit of feedback. The enemy sometimes are sometimes too spongy. I hope in the full game there's a non-linear open level. the weapons really didn\t varied too much except the shotgun which is nice. Still its very promising. Keep up the good work.

(+2)

Hey, Great game. How long have you been working on the project?

(+1)

Thanks! The project was started in October 2021, but some assets and script was a recycled version from my old discontinued Doom Mod that I made in 2019 called Jitok Gun (there's still some preview of this mod if you try to find it on Twitter with #JitokGun hashtag)

(+1)

Amazing experience.

Really cool graphics and music.

(+1)

great Demo, having fun playing it !!

(+1)

Like my EGA DOS machine days. But in real 3D and not 2.5D :-) Love it! You should get this on Steam so more ppl will find it.

Are you planning to bring this to Steam?

Yes! Btw I'm still trying to collect some additional funds to buy the Steam Direct so I could bring this to Steam

(+1)

Dope, consider me a buyer!

(+1)

WOW, it's really fun!!! I Love IT!

Really enjoyed this demo, made me revive my childhood Doom times but with sparky colors :D
I'm not sure if I picked up an item or if it's a bug but right before going to the final room I loaded an autosave and I became invincible so I had to restart the game since it's not fun playing in god mode.I'm excited to play the full version. Great job so far!

(+1)

Hi, thanks for playing! Btw, I already fixed the save game issue now. It happens because I accidentally uploaded my own save game to the version you download, and you just loaded my save game and that's why you're in god mode

The game his really punchy effects and got a good aestetic going. And I´m glad someone finally makes use of the timestop powerup. But the visual clutter is just too much to keep up. I often didn´t see what killed me or where the attack came from. That extends to the weapons which look very similar and it´s not that clear what they do. In such frantic firefights it´s really not fun guessing what I have selected by the color alone.

The rifle is pretty underwhelming especially compared to the plasmagun which has a huge ammo pool. I suggest buffing the damage and removing the recoil so it becomes viable for stunlocking crowds. Also while the scope is cool, trading fov for accuracy over distance is never really a good deal in these small and hectic arenas. It should be replaced with something more directly useful or at least give the bullets some special property to make it worth the reduced fov.

what I really like is the quick fist barage and I hope it gets more use in the finished levels.

Will you do a Linux build? :D

(+1)

Probably.. It's already can run on Linux but I'm still have a little issue there and that's why I haven't officially released the Linux version. I hope I could resolve the problem soon!

Yes please release a linux build, i would love to play it

This is what happens when Retro Blazer, Chex Quest and Adventures of the Square had a baby. I liked the gameplay, the variety of weapons/monsters and the awesome time freeze powerup. For a demo level it was designed really well. I know that this level does not reflective the quality of the final game and level design but here are 3 suggestions:

1. Don't give the player all the weapons in the first area of the first map. Make them earn their weapons/powerups as they play through the entire game. This makes it more of a challenge and gives the player more reason to explore their environment.

2. The maps need more verticality; they feel too flat. I would like to see, deathtraps, steps and 3D floors for catwalks and walkways. This is designed using the GZDoom engine, so you might as well use its features. 3D floors and fake water are not that hard to set up in GZ/Doom Builder. Old versions of ZDoom even support them.

3. I don't know if the game intentions are to be more retro or modern retro. If it's the former, you can draw a lot of inspiration from Heretic with its awesome set of powerups. If it's the latter, you can grant the player free movement by allowing jumping puzzles and platforming segments. This would give the maps more variety and take secret finding to a whole new level.

I want more! This game was pretty fun and challenging! Full version please :)

(+1)

Great game. can't wait for full version of the game. love the artwork, music and odd things like time freezing.

(+1)

this is cool but if you quit you cant open the saves anymore for some reason

Hi, thanks! Btw, I already fixed the save game issue now. It happens because I accidentally uploaded my own save game to the version you download.

oh, no problem i still enjoyed the game

(+1)

Mantap gameplaynya. Gambarnya juga bagus. Belum coba difficulty yang paling susah sih, tapi Medium aja udah lumayan menantang. Pengen liat bossnya kayak gimana, paling nggak kasih liat 1 boss di demo. Gamenya udh lumayan bagus, lanjutkan bang!

makasih! Bossnya sengaja ga dimasukin haha takut spoiler.. ditunggu aja ya versi fullnya!

(+1)

Very nice artstyle and punchy weapons. Demo level was pretty linear, and weapons didn't feel all that varied from one another. Got through the levels on most skill levels just relying on the plasma gun. Enemies on Hard skill and up are too spongy and deal too much damage. Scaling enemy health and damage makes the game more of a frustrating slog than a challenge. You may want to reduce the recoil on the rifle by about half, its low damage and recoil makes it inferior to the plasma gun. Still, a very promising first concept - hope to see more varied levels and challenges.

Thanks for playing and giving the feedback! Yes the level is too linear for me too and that's why I won't include it on the full version because I just want to demonstrate the feel of the game without anyone complaining about getting lost. I'll try my best to balance the difficulty and fix some weapon issues in the future! Thanks!!
